WINTER MOUNTAIN LEADER REFRESHER COURSE

So you have booked your winter mountain leader assessment. Good work!!! This is one of the most highly respected awards in the British outdoor industry.

One of the best ways to prepare for your assessment is to come out for a weekend and go over the essential skills needed to help you pass.

After the 6 day training course its normal for people to forget or miss out on information. We also have 9 months a year without winter, so it’s not always easy to train and prepare.

This weekend is designed to make sure you have the opportunity to fine tune your skills, to ensure your demonstrations and technics are assessment ready.

The course will only be ran by a current winter mountain leader course director, so you can be assured that your training and feedback will be as current as it can be.

The course will run on maximum ratios 1:4. This is for 2 reasons: firstly, you will get the best opportunity for coaching and feedback. Secondly, this is the ratio for your assessment so will give the opportunity to practice in similar situations.

The course will run over 2 days and will include personal/leadership skills, route planning, avalanche awareness using ‘Be Avalanche Aware’, emergency shelters, emergency ropework and poor visibility navigation. The weather and your individual needs will dictate the areas of the syllabus we will spend the most time on. Navigation will normally be in the dark, but on occasions if the wind or weather is too harsh it may be done in the cloud/mist or whatever conditions the mountain provides us on the weekend. We will do our best to be out in poor visibility to get the most from the course.

We can also look at log books and suggest options to help improve your skills and experience after the course.

The course will meet at 9am on the first day. During this meeting we will work out logistics and options for the weekend based on the weather. The course will be ran out of Aviemore only a short drive to the Cairngorms, giving us a variety of venues.

We will normally plan to practice poor visibility navigation on the Saturday evening but please prepare for a later finish on the Sunday too. This will give us the chance to do night navigation on Sunday night if the weather does not allow us to get out on the first evening. If you would be unable to do a Sunday evening night nav session please mention whilst booking.
